Surrounding Environment
This is the student street.
Hongo and Komaba are the streets known for the University of Tokyo, while Hyakumanben is the street known for Kyoto University. Hyakumanben has the atmosphere of a student town. The name Hyakumanben is said to come from Chionji Temple, located at the northeast corner of the intersection of the street. It is said that the temple was named after a monk who chanted the Buddhist prayer a million times at the end of the Kamakura period (1185-1333), which caused a plague to subside.
It has been about 130 years since Kyoto University was founded here, and many Doshisha University and Kyoto University of the Arts students now live here. Hyakumanben is an easy-living street with many inexpensive and delicious set-meal restaurants, ramen shops, coffee shops where students can spend time with friends, and unique antiquarian bookstores. The confluence of the Kamo and Takano Rivers, known as the Kamo River Delta, has been used as a filming location for movies and animations. It attracts many young people and families as a spot for relaxation. If you go a little further afield, you will find many places to stroll on weekends and holidays. These places include Shimogamo-jinja Shrine, a World Heritage site famous for its deity of marriage, and the Philosopher’s Path, crowded with many tourists during the cherry blossom season.
